Nineteen-year-old Tarikuwa Lemma is a survivor, of an international adoption scandal. When she was 13, she was effectively sold from her native Ethiopia to an American family. The corrupt “adoption agency” convinced her father, who was a widow, that Tarikuwa and her younger sisters were headed to the U.S. as part of an educational exchange program, and that they would return home every summer and on holiday breaks. Little did he know, his daughters had been placed with adoptive couples in the U.S., never to return. Tarikuwa’s name was changed against her will, and she was forbidden by her American “family” from speaking her native language. The issue of transnational adoption, its evangelical Christian component, and the exploitation of communities that sometimes results, is the subject of the book, The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking and the New Gospel of Adoption by Kathryn Joyce, who appeared, along with Tarikuwa, on last Sunday’s “Melissa Harris Perry” show on MSNBC. Below is Tarikuwa’s satirical look at the “rescue” of children from her home country, to “better lives” in America.

Doesn’t seem to matter the background of the child, the methods of colonialism and assimilation haven’t changed.

More and more children being arrested for trivial things…

#1 At one public school down in Texas, a 12-year-old girl named Sarah Bustamantes was recently arrested for spraying herself with perfume.

#2 A 13-year-old student at a school in Albuquerque, New Mexico was recently arrested by police for burping in class.

#3 Another student down in Albuquerque was forced to strip down to his underwear while five adults watched because he had $200 in his pocket. The student was never formally charged with doing anything wrong.

#4 A security guard at one school in California broke the arm of a 16-year-old girl because she left some crumbs on the floor after cleaning up some cake that she had spilled.

#5 One teenage couple down in Houston poured milk on each other during a squabble while they were breaking up. Instead of being sent to see the principal, they were arrested and sent to court.

#6 In early 2010, a 12-year-old girl at a school in Forest Hills, New York was arrested by police and marched out of her school in handcuffs just because she doodled on her desk. “I love my friends Abby and Faith” was what she reportedly scribbled on her desk.

#7 A 6-year-old girl down in Florida was handcuffed and sent to a mental facility after throwing temper tantrums at her elementary school.

#8 One student down in Texas was reportedly arrested by police for throwing paper airplanes in class.

#9 A 17-year-old honor student in North Carolina named Ashley Smithwick accidentally took her father’s lunch with her to school. It contained a small paring knife which he would use to slice up apples. So what happened to this standout student when the school discovered this? The school suspended her for the rest of the year and the police charged her with a misdemeanor.

#10 In Allentown, Pennsylvania a 14-year-old girl was tasered in the groin area by a school security officer even though she had put up her hands in the air to surrender.

#11 Down in Florida, an 11-year-old student was arrested, thrown in jail and charged with a third-degree felony for bringing a plastic butter knife to school.

#12 Back in 2009, an 8-year-old boy in Massachusetts was sent home from school and was forced to undergo a psychological evaluation because he drew a picture of Jesus on the cross.

#13 A police officer in San Mateo, California blasted a 7-year-old special education student in the face with pepper spray because he would not quit climbing on the furniture.

#14 In America today, even 5-year-old children are treated brutally by police. The following is from a recent article that described what happened to one very young student in Stockton, California a while back….

“Earlier this year, a Stockton student was handcuffed with zip ties on his hands and feet, forced to go to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and was charged with battery on a police officer. That student was 5 years old”.

#15 At one school in Connecticut, a 17-year-old boy was thrown to the floor and tasered five times because he was yelling at a cafeteria worker.

#16 A teenager in suburban Dallas was forced to take on a part-time job after being ticketed for using foul language in one high school classroom. The original ticket was for $340, but additional fees have raised the total bill to $637.

#17 A few months ago, police were called out when a little girl kissed a little boy during a physical education class at an elementary school down in Florida.

#18 A 6-year-old boy was recently charged with sexual battery for some “inappropriate touching” during a game of tag at one elementary school in the San Francisco area.

#19 In Massachusetts, police were recently sent out to collect an overdue library book from a 5-year-old girl.

Its just I had this bad day at work yesterday and I just felt like I couldn’t do the fake persona thing. I tried to be loud and talkative and whatever but it was so uncomfortable I just couldn’t do it well enough =/

So now I’m kinda worried about going in to work. I really have to just start being more fake and outgoing. My problem is I try to be sincere and nice to people and I don’t know how to do that without giving quiet one on one attention and well, that doesn’t really fit well with my job. Anyway. I’m going to try to do better next time, maybe I’ll learn how to actually talk to people and stuff.

Also work was kinda awful last time because one of the managers told this guy he couldn’t use our bathroom because he “wasn’t a customer” but really it was because he was homeless and the manager went on about how that guy had been there before and slept at the table or whatever, but of course some bro-y dude comes in and uses the bathroom and leaves without buying anything, no problem. It just made me sick and embarrassed to be working there. And the way the manager did it was the worst, he just kept yelling at the guy as he went down the hall to the bathroom. Telling him he was on the phone with the cops and being really condecending and then when the guy comes out of the bathroom, the manager tells him “hey, you want an application? I’m the manager, you should fill this out” or whatever, sarcastically, and puts an application in the guy’s hand, the guy walks out and the manager is laughing.

god i could just throw up people are such trash.

Expert on Mental Illness Reveals Her Own Struggle

Expert on Mental Illness Reveals Her Own Struggle:
toopunktofuck:

“No, Marsha,” the patient replied, in an encounter last spring. “I mean one of us. Like us. Because if you were, it would give all of us so much hope.”

It went well and the manager said i was doing a good job, was impressed that I tried taking delivery orders (though I messed one of them up and kept inputting things as “extra ___” instead of “add ____” before i saw the add buttons. Also I am too short to see the screens by the phones so it took me too long to take orders but hey, they were impressed enough that I tried it (and honestly, I only messed up one so, not too bad!)

One sad thing is this guy I worked with on my first day is getting fired because he didn’t show and didn’t call today, and one no show-no call gets you fired at Jimmy John’s. And he was the nicest guy I worked with =/ Which is a bummer.

Today I’m sending out my mom’s mother’s day gift (black licorice and caramel) and getting food and bedding for the rats. I tried to do it on my way home but I needed paper to write my mom a letter and the pet store near me doesn’t usually carry good rat food so I’ll have to find another pet store.

Anyway, this is all a mundane catch up. Work is keeping me from picking too much and it feels good to be out of the house/ forces me to run some errands.

<3333

going to take care of those ratties now.

last night i had a dream where i told everyone that i hated them, sarcastically, but really it was...

last night i had a dream where i told everyone that i hated them, sarcastically, but really it was like i didn’t hate anyone i was just so mad at them and then i left the room full of people.

i used to be really sociable. i used to go through these phases that would last usually about a year where i would find some kindred group of people and we would be very close but after that year is up, they start to really learn about my mental health problems and inability to communicate and etc. and in the end i sever ties with everyone and move on. then a new year begins.

i just did that twice in the past two years and i think i’m getting to the point where i am burnt out on people. i know i talked a lot of shit about community and polyamory and anti-coupling, but tim knows be very very well and he loves me completely, with all the weirdness and craziness and anger. and i just don’t know if i want to spend time around too many other people, because they don’t love me unconditionally and i don’t think most of them could.

vulturehopes:

Tim and I were talking about how cool it would be to have a ton of pets and he said “weasels” and I was like “you mean ferrets?” and he said “no” and this makes sense now. could definitely hang out with one of these baby weasels.

neon-casket:

The troubling viral trend of the “hilarious” Black poor person
May 7, 2013

Charles Ramsey, the man who helped rescue three Cleveland women presumed dead after going missing a decade ago, has become an instant Internet meme. It’s hardly surprising—the interviews he gave yesterday provide plenty of fodder for a viral video, including memorable soundbites (“I was eatin’ my McDonald’s”) and lots of enthusiastic gestures. But as Miles Klee and Connor Simpson have noted, Ramsey’s heroism is quickly being overshadowed by the public’s desire to laugh at and autotune his story, and that’s a shame. Ramsey has become the latest in a fairly recent trend of “hilarious” black neighbors, unwitting Internet celebrities whose appeal seems rooted in a “colorful” style that is always immediately recognizable as poor or working-class.

Before Ramsey, there was Antoine Dodson, who saved his younger sister from an intruder, only to wind up famous for his flamboyant recounting of the story to a reporter. Since Dodson’s rise to fame, there have been others: Sweet Brown, a woman who barely escaped her apartment complex during a fire last year, and Michelle Clarke, who couldn’t fathom the hailstorm that rained down in her hometown of Houston, and in turn became “the next Sweet Brown.”

Granted, the buzzworthy tactic of reporters interviewing the most loquacious witnesses to a crime or other event is nothing new, and YouTube has countless examples of people of all ethnicities saying ridiculous things. One woman, for instance, saw fit to casually mention her breasts while discussing a local accident, while another man described a car crash with theatrical flair. Earlier this year, a “hatchet-wielding hitchhiker” named Kai matched Dodson’s fame with his astonishing account of rescuing a woman from a racist attacker. But none of those people have been subjected to quite the same level of derisive memeification as Brown, Clark, and now, perhaps, Ramsey—the inescapable echoes of “Hide yo’ kids, hide yo’ wife!” and “Kabooyaw,” the tens of millions of YouTube hits and cameos in other viral videos, even commercials.

It’s difficult to watch these videos and not sense that their popularity has something to do with a persistent, if unconscious, desire to see black people perform. Even before the genuinely heroic Ramsey came along, some viewers had expressed concern that the laughter directed at people like Sweet Brown plays into the most basic stereotyping of blacks as simple-minded ramblers living in the “ghetto,” socially out of step with the rest of educated America. Black or white, seeing Clark and Dodson merely as funny instances of random poor people talking nonsense is disrespectful at best. And shushing away the question of race seems like wishful thinking.

Ramsey is particularly striking in this regard, since, for a moment at least, he put the issue of race front and center himself. Describing the rescue of Amanda Berry and her fellow captives, he says, “I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms. Something is wrong here. Dead giveaway!”

The candid statement seems to catch the reporter off guard; he ends the interview shortly afterward. And it’s notable that among the many memorable things Ramsey said on camera, this one has gotten less meme-attention than most. Those who are simply having fun with the footage of Ramsey might pause for a second to actually listen to the man. He clearly knows a thing or two about the way racism prevents us from seeing each other as people.

Source

Now that you know this is a thing, please stop sharing these memes. Poor Black people speaking candidly about various serious incidents isn’t a hilarious joke.

this is very, very, very, important

Also please note that Mr. Ramsey has declined the reward money and stated it should be given to the victims. He’s a hero, not a fucking joke.
